Rose
reports on her mission to Union Island in the Grenadines in June 2005:
Like precious diamonds from the hands of
our Creator God, stand the Grenadines – beautiful and challenging.
I have been privileged to work in Union
Island, one of the Grenadine Islands. For me, it was a very fulfilling
experience, because I was able to see the Church in its need.
Yes, this quote from scriptures “The
harvest is ready but the labourers are few, pray that the Lord of the
harvest send labourers into his harvest,” apply to those islands.
Because of the lack of Priests in these
islands, it is very difficult. Fr Andrew Roache is in charge of Union,
Canouan and Mayreau. His mode of transport is the boat; and sometimes this
crossing can be very perilous but he is constantly reminded of the disciples
in the boat and Jesus asleep. He was able to bring the storm to a whisper.
For many people in the islands it is not really the physical storm, but the
storms of conflict, poverty and a lack of development. For the Church to be
active and alive in these areas it has to be a sacramental presence to the
people.
The call and challenge goes beyond the
confines of the physical structure to the streets, the schools, the
businesses and the many aspects of life. Very often fishermen go out and
come back with nothing. It is on this daily catch that their livelihood
depends.
For me, Union, Canouan and Bequia islands
are very challenging and exciting. I was able with the help of God and a
few of the faithful to start afresh a weekly prayer meeting, Bible study,
and to prepare nine children for Holy Communion and to receive two young
adults into the Church. The harvest is ready!
As the waters continue to wash gently upon
the shores of these beautiful islands, may God’s constant love and
gentleness continue to enfold, sustain and strengthen His Church.
May we one day be a living presence in
these islands.
Let us pray for our Priests and Bishops.
